The tools and mechanics of lighting will continue to evolve and may even become less important as the sensitivity of digital chips increase.
What will never change is the need for someone to utilize light and lighting as a fundamental storytelling element.
There is a difference between a great cinematographer (or lighting Gaffer) and a photo-technician. Yes, a technician can still light a scene beautifully, but a great cinematographer will create lighting that seamlessly reflects and adds to the story being told. The lighting enhances the performances, directs the viewer's attention and provides the film's texture, both literally and figuratively. Look at the work of Roger Deakins, Connie Hall, Gordon Willis, or any of the modern masters and you'll both see and feel this.
