Commonplace usage of digital technology tools like Whatsapp and gmail have made work-life separation hard to achieve in practice.
It is important to set boundaries so that you can approach work with a fresh, proactive mindset. Most people do this out of ignorance or unhealthy habits developed in their careers.
In this case, you can be explicit by requesting that work request be made by email. If your boss continues texting you at odd hours, you can reply back saying, “shall we have a quick check-in at 10 am when I am in the office and we can discuss this?”.
If you continue drawing your boundaries and navigate them with practical suggestions, they will acclimate to the changes. This will take time, be patient.
If they continue to push back and make demands that you are unable to meet or are unacceptable to you - raise it calmly in a face to face meeting, making your expectations and alternatives clear. If they continue to ignore or respond by reducing your opportunities to grow, you can always alert HR or their supervisor.
